COMMUNITY SAFETY GROUP

Fire Safety Prevents Loss of Lives

INTRODUCTION

Around 500 people die and thousands are injured in fires in the UK, 70% of whom are people who become trapped by fire and smoke before they have time to escape. Your accommodation should have fire safety measures to safeguard you and prevent you from becoming one of these statistics.

Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade receive over 1600 calls to student accommodation last year. The majority of which were false alarms. Such a high number of calls is unacceptable to the Fire Brigade as calls to this type of accommodation normally require the commitment of three fire appliances. These fire appliances could be more effectively deployed to give immediate assistance to others that may be in life threatening situations. The majority of these calls result from lack of information and guidance relating to fire safety measures.

The Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade in conjunction with the College Health and Safety Office has produced this booklet. It’s aim is to inform you of:

I would urge you to take a few moments to familiarise yourself with its contents.

FIRE PREVENTION

The majority of fires in the home are caused by:

Take control. Take positive action to prevent a fire in your home.

Fires that originate in the living room statistically kill more people, get into the routine of checking the living room for potential causes of fire before going to bed.

Last year nearly 800 people lost their lives in fires, don’t let yourself become a statistic, take action.

FIRE DETECTION

The accommodation you are in should contain a means of alerting you to the presence of fire and smoke. Most commonly this is a Smoke Alarm.

Smoke Alarms

If you do not have a smoke alarm - GET ONE AND INSTALL IT (in accordance with the manufacture’s guidelines)

To ensure you get an early warning of fire make sure you:

REMEMBER

About 1 in 4 battery operated smoke alarms fail to operate because they do not have a battery in them or the battery fitted is flat. Once you have checked your smoke alarm fill in your test record.

There is a test record on the back cover for your use.

What is your life worth? The cost of a battery is £2.

FIRE SAFETY MEASURES

A Fire Plan.

A fire can develop and spread very quickly, therefore it is essential for you to plan what action should be taken to escape.

What to do if your smoke alarm goes off:

When your escape route CAN be used

When your escape route CANNOT be used

Once inside the safe room, close the door and pack towels or clothing around it to keep smoke out. If there is a telephone call 999, if not go to a window, open it and shout FIRE to attract attention. Stay at the open window.

DO NOT JUMP OUT OF WINDOWS
